This is by no means an exhaustive list, but we have copies of many of the books listed below, and have found all of them useful in their different ways. You could visit your local library to check some of them out before deciding to make a purchase! A good guide can add greatly to the enjoyment of your holiday.
 


Cadogan's Brittany

Easily the most readable, well-informed, well-written and often amusing book on all aspects of the history, people and places of Brittany. Written by a Breton, it is full of entertainment and information you couldn't find anywhere else. Has some lovely line-drawings, but no photographs.

 
Insight Guides: Brittany

Very much a journalistic approach. An enjoyable and informative book, with the most atmospheric and inspiring photographs - many of typical Breton folk.

Highly recommended.

Everyman's Guide– Brittany

Thoroughly interesting and most beautifully illustrated. This is a book to treasure.

 

Holiday Walks in Brittany

This guide offers 25 walks, scattered thoughout Brittany. In addition to basic route directions, there are details of historical, geographical and social interest.

The Rough Guide: Brittany & Normandy

Very informative and amusing guide. Gives most of the information you'll find in the Michelin Guide, but much more entertaining.

Quite a few surprises here and some wry comments. I loved it!

Organised in a practical way. Perhaps better suited to the first-time visitor to Brittany.

 

Landscapes of Brittany

A Sunflower Countryside Guide

Divided into three sections: car tours (with a colour pull-out touring map), picnics, and walks for all ages and abilities. All walks are described in full and illustrated with large-scale maps.

Excellent book! Now out of print, but your local library may have a copy....

 

 

Michelin Green Guide

Brittany

A goodl travel companion offering up-to-date information and suggestions on what to see and what to do in Brittany. It also contains information on the history and the cultural heritage of the country.

 

Lonely Planet Guide

Brittany & Normandy

The information is accurate and up-to-date, though there aren't so many pictures and illustrations as with some of the other guides.

 

Eyewitness Guide to Brittany

As with most Dorling Kindersley books, beautifully produced and a joy to read. Lots of practical information and maps.

 

Petit Fute Travel Guides

Brittany

A good practical guide by travel journalists who live in the locality.

The Brittany Coastal Path

A specialist book for walkers. Brittany has some of the most dramatic and varied coastline in all Europe, and there are ancient towns to explore and picturesque fishing villages by the score. There are also details of 78, mainly circular, walks that are suitable for day walks.
