Brittany is
a region in north-west France with strong historical ties to
the British Isles. It is divided into four Departments - Morbihan, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Côtes
d'Armor. But traditionally Loire-Atlantique (44)
is also a part of Brittany, and its capital, Nantes, is the old
Breton capital.
The
numbers on the map - eg 56 for Morbihan - are also the first
two numbers of the Post Code and the last two letters of car
registration plates! |
We
chose to live in Brittany - and the Morbihan in particular -
for a number of reasons: the climate is one of the best in France,
with less annual rainfall than Provence, mild winters and plenty
of summer sunshine; a spectacular coastline - 700 miles of it!
- with glorious beaches, spectacular cliffs, pretty fishing villages
and busy ports; so much history, from prehistoric times onwards;
and a genuinely friendly people.
And
why the Morbihan? Well, the weather in south Morbihan is the
best in Brittany (see the map on the right) and the scenery
is more varied than elsewhere; also it is the only department
with a Breton name.... |
